I own a pair of Audiolab 8000M power amps.
I upgraded the internal speaker hook up wire from a piece of soft non insulated wire to solid silver ‘HGC’ 1mm wire. I also used the teflon insulation. This is the short wire that is soldered in to the pcb that attaches to the standard ‘Cliff’ branded speaker terminals. I also invested in a pair of 'short' CMC silver plated speaker terminals.
To find out if there was a benefit to the sound I played various sorts of music through the standard amp and one speaker. I then switched to the upgraded amp using the same single speaker. (Small Sonus Faber)
With changing the speaker terminals to the silver plated CMC ones, the sound became tighter, clearer and more lively. The standard amp by comparison sounded warmer and certainly pleasant playing simple pieces but in my view playing rock or large orchestra pieces I found it a bit muddled in the end. For example
while playing Van Morison the instruments where finally in their place and certainly easier to listen to. With classical pieces you can appreciate the timbre of the interments and understand better the words of the song. I am pleased with the results and would recommend to anyone investing a couple of hours one evening making this upgrade.
This little project cost me £36 plus one 12mm drill bit from Screw-fix £8.
