I read the article by Vassilis on the AV Forums website about how he upgraded his Audiolab amps. I thought I should give this a try as the sound from my amps was too warm, flat, distorted and slow for my taste.
I started by upgrade the Nichicon electrolytic capacitors to Elna Silmic II. This certainly improved the clarity at the top end however the bass was still a little slow.
However I then noticed that whoever built these amps had put in the cheapest 8 pin operational amplifier “op-amp’s”, the OPA 134 rather than the OP627 as specified on the PCB!. (Perhaps you only got those if you bought the Mclaren 125M version?)
I bought a pair of these New ClassD op-amps in Jan 2012 for my Audiolab 8000M mono power amplifiers.
Even with a solder sucker I found it difficult to remove the 8 pin op-amp chip. Once they were out it was a 2 min job to solder the new ones in. I also soldered back in the small ‘103’ cap across from pins 4 to 7.
The sound from my amps has been greatly improved by these little op-amp’s. Much more so than upgrading the capacitors. Across the audio spectrum the sound is clearer and faster. It’s so nice I am listening to all my favorite music all over again.
Don’t hesitate to order these
