Introduction
With the recent launch of the Audio Note (AN) stereo stepped attenuator combined with a mass of requests to fit it into the Glasshouse Passive pre-amp No.1, we have come up with the option to buy the passive with the AN attenuator. The standard kit comes with the excellent Dale Vishay stepped attenuator, a superb stepped but for those who wanted a bit extra the well received AN stepped was the first choice. These 100k volume control (stereo) feature 23 steps with heavily silver plated copper contacts, it is a ladder type with the main load resistor being a 2 watt Audio Note™ tantalum and a 0.5W AN tant for each step. These attenuators are used in the M9 Phono pre-amplifier and will be introduced in the M10 Line and ONGAKU. The actually stepped attenuator is slightly larger than the Dale Vishay so a bit of manipulation is required to fit but is no great effort.

How does it sound?
The Audio Note stepped attenuator adds a new dimension to clarity, realising more detail than the Dale Vishay stepped. The lower frequencies seem deeper with superb control, the mids are clean and smooth and the highs just seem to sing. Overall the sound is a step towards a good active pre-amplifier, more dynamics and drive, a true winner.
