Tannoy GRF Crossover Upgrade

Tannoy GRF Crossover Upgrade

Some lovely words from MR SY regarding improvement in his listening experience

I just wanted to say a massive thank you for your advice on the crossover parts for my Tannoy GRFs.

They’re now finished (images attached), installed and playing and the difference is extraordinary. I expected the larger cabinets to bring more scale and ease, but I don’t think I realised how much the crossovers would open everything up. The sound is bigger, deeper and more natural, but still has that warmth and humanity that makes old Tannoys so special but I’m genuinely shocked by how good the entire system sounds now the new speakers are in place.

Nick personally selected a combination of Duelund, Mundorf Silver and Audio Note components for the custom crossovers in my 1960s Tannoy GRFs. The result has transformed my listening experience. His knowledge is exceptional, but it’s his judgement in knowing how to combine the right components that makes the difference.

Compared with my old Lancasters, it’s a transformational step up. The Lancasters were also refurbished and sounded lovely, but the cabinets were much smaller and the crossovers were left original. The GRFs have really shown me what the 15” Monitor Golds can do when the cabinet and crossover are both right. The difference is night and day.

I’ve also bought a pair of Lancaster Corners - these are much larger than standard Lancasters and the bass is deeper because they use the corner of the room to amplify bass.   I'll use this pair for my record shop / listening bar I’m opening in Lewes later this year.   I’ll look at upgrading the crossover components on those too - probably in a slightly more practical cost effective way, but with the same basic idea of keeping the Tannoy character and original coils but replacing and upgrading worn caps.

Brett has done a beautiful job building them. I’ve attached a few photos so you can see the finished result.

Thanks again for being so generous with your time and advice. It really has made a big difference. I’ve posted images and comments on Tannoy and Audio Note Facebook forums calling out your advice and excellent service.
