How To Build an Affordable UK Mains Cable
Nick goes through how to assemble an affordable UK Mains Cable. Giving examples at different price points.
Low Cost - £25.00 approx.
- KAISER-794: Kaiser Female IEC plug, Silver Plated
- LAPP Olflex Classic 110 mains cable
- Permaplug Silver Plated UK Mains Plug
- HTSC9.5, Clear heatshrink 2:1, 9.5mm diameter x 5cm (insulating cut screen portion)
- HTSC3.2, Clear heatshrink 2:1, 3.2mm diameter x 5cm (insulation 0.5mm diameter connecting screen to earth conductor)
- WBT-0434: Copper cable end sleeve, AWG 13, 2.1mm dia x 6, for covering exposed conductors, stops multiscreen wires from being shredded when wired up.
Solder required if wiring screen braid at UK mains plug end only (IEC end braid cut short), soldering not required if screen braid cut short at both ends and not wired to earth braid.
An alternative mains cable to use for low-cost cable the Belden 19364 mains cable where no soldering required and doesn't have screening braid, but has a drain wire.
Medium Cost - £90.00 approx.
- MS9315: MS HD Power IEC Plug, polished un-plated x 1
- MS328: MS HD Power 13A UK mains plug, unplated x 1
- Belden 83803 mains cable x 2
- WBT-0435: Copper cable end sleeve, AWG 11, 2.7mm dia x 6 for covering exposed conductors, stops multiscreen wires from being shredded when wired up.
Solder required if wiring screen braid at UK mains plug end only (IEC end braid cut short), soldering not required if screen braid cut short at both ends and not wired to earth braid.
An alternative mains cable to use for medium-cost cable would be the Neotech NEP-4003 UP-OFC Copper Silver plated Mains Cable
