Jantzen Iron Core Coil with Discs
Jantzen iron core coils/inductors are made from non-ferrite pressed Somaloy iron powder. These are generally recommended for the bass & midrange sections on crossovers. They offer a higher inductance in a smaller package than an air-core coil/inductor. They are therefore useful for applications where space is limited and cost is a premium.
The Iron Core Coils feature low DCR, which does not alter the driver's damping factor or contribute to loss of efficiency. Power handling capability is determined by core size and wire thickness. It features high-purity copper wire and is made with baked wire (bonding lacquer) spliced onto an iron (non-ferrite) core. The iron core coil with end disc features less copper wire and, due to more core/disc material, also higher distortion, but has a lower cost due to less copper usage.
When comparing the two types of Iron Core coils, most customers prefer the coil without discs, especially if space on the crossover is not a significant issue. Sonically, there is no significant difference between the two types. The discs version also lower the disruption area around the coil, which means that these coils can be mounted closer to each other, if spacing on the crossover is an issue.
All ferromagnetic cored inductors will exhibit various levels of audible noise/distortion (hum). When such noise/distortion (hum) becomes audible will depend on various driver and crossover-specific factors, which are best determined by doing real-world listening tests.
